The Guitar RockStar Look
Rock or Rock Inspired Tees
Of course, the holy grail of rock tees for tots is the Kingsley Pots and Pans Band Tee, but there are other cool rock inspired tees out there for girls and boys of all ages.
Look for distressed, faded, super soft vintage-link rock tees. Also popular are tees with traditional rock images, particularly skulls.
Pants or Skirts for girls?
The Rock Girl needs a pair of super cool jeans, choose a pair of distressed jeans to go with a distressed top.
Denim skirts are also great for this look because it gives the wearer an opportunity to show off her funky tights, socks or footwear.
Tights or Socks
Funky tights or socks are so much fun. The favourite is striped tights in wild colors. Look around for fun patterned tights and socks in bright colors, fun patterns or interesting textures. Or, keep with the muted color pattern of a vintage inspired rock tee.
Jean Pool for boys!
Jeans and rock 'n' roll have always gone together—from Elvis's cuffed trousers to Jimi's bellbottoms, and even Eminem's oversized dungarees. Right now, the skin-tight, tapered look is de rigueur for hot bands, and, according to Andrew Buckler of Buckler Jeans, it's all because of one man. "Peter Murphy of Bauhaus is the king of the rock style that bands like the Strokes and Franz Ferdinand have revived," says the designer, who has outfitted rockers including Snow Patrol and the Editors. "To make it work you need the skinniest, tightest pair of black jeans you can possibly imagine," he declares.
Choosing Accessories
- Badges and pins
- Unusual hats
- Ties used as a belt
Pen Pals
Fashion is often the earliest, easiest way a budding rocker tries to express himself. Just think of Pretty in Pink's Duckie, or that tortured guy in high school whose book bag was covered in patches, pins and scrawls. Sometimes, however, clothing can't express enough, so some rockers, such as R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe, Prince and, most recently, Chris Martin have all resorted to spelling it out literally on their bodies. You would have thought their music would be able to say enough.
Nerdy Is The New Trashy
The trailer park look had a foothold on the rock scene for years (see: Kid Rock, Limp Bizkit), but this year it's all about Geek Chic. Williamsburg wunderkinder We Are Scientists and West Coast favourites Death Cab for Cutie look like AV-club poster kids in their frumpy sweaters and jackets, paired with sneakers and dark socks. Throw on some horn rims and you're ready to rock. Buddy Holly never made nerdiness look this cool.
Statement Pieces
Nothing pulls together an ensemble like an accessory, and if you're a rock star, creating a signature look is key. Bono and his sunglasses, Flavor Flav has his clocks, Nelly has his gold grill and rock star wannabe Lindsay Lohan even tried to get in the game this year with Karl Lagerfeld's black leather glove.
Key elements to a rock star’s look include
- Vintage rock T-shirt, at least two sizes too small
- Truckers’ baseball cap
- Big Elvis-style sunglasses
- Messed-up hair (to achieve this look, simply avoid combing or washing your hair)
Items to avoid
- Bling-bling (that is reserved for rappers only)
