Your moving day is approaching. Soon enough, you’re going to have to pack up everything in your entire house and bring it to your brand-new address. But before you start gathering your cardboard boxes and rolls of packing tape, you should read these crucial moving tips.

1. Measure First

You don’t want to spend ages packing and transporting your living room furniture and finding out you can’t get it through your new front door. So, before moving day, you should measure your doorways and hallways. Do this with your current house and your new house. Then, measure your biggest pieces of furniture (couches, dining room tables, mattresses, etc.). This will help you figure out if any pieces will be difficult — or worse, impossible — to move.

You can find some workarounds for this problem. You could disassemble the larger pieces of furniture and reassemble them after you move in. Or you could replace the too-big furniture with options that work with your new house.

If you’re replacing your furniture, have the replacements delivered and assembled at your new address. This will save you some effort on moving day.

2. Remove the Junk

Before you start packing things in boxes, you should sort through your belongings. Figure out what you should keep and what you should leave behind. Doing this will give you a lighter load to move.

What should you do with your junk?

  • If it’s in good condition still, you might be able to sell it online for a profit. You can do this with gently used furniture, clothing, electronics and other belongings.
  • If you can’t sell it, you could donate it to a charitable organization, like Habitat for Humanity.
  • If it’s not in good condition, you could try to sell the parts. For instance, you could sell your old appliances at a scrap metal yard.
  • If it’s not in good condition, you could toss it. You may want to call a professional junk removal company to help you get rid of it in a single day.

3. Determine Your Moving Vehicle

Find out what type of vehicle you’ll need for moving day. You may need a small moving van, or you may need something bigger — like a shipping container.

A shipping container is an ideal option for people who need to transport the contents of an entire house (along with a storage shed or garage) all in a single trip. After all, shipping containers are designed to carry a lot of cargo on international journeys. So, they will be certainly capable of carrying your household items to your newest home all in one go. Find out how to move shipping containers once you’ve packed them full of your boxes on moving day. The information could come in handy.

You don’t want to realize that come moving day, you have too much stuff and not enough room in your moving van. That will throw a massive wrench into your moving plans.

4. Do a Deep Clean

Before you move into your new house, you should do a deep clean. The rooms will be completely empty. It’s the perfect time to sweep and mop the floors, wash the walls and wipe down the cupboards. These tasks will be much harder to complete once all your moving boxes are there.

If it’s within your budget, you could hire a cleaning service to tackle the empty rooms. This might save you some stress and make the moving process much easier.

Don’t let your moving day be a disaster. Follow these tips to make the process a complete breeze.
