Have you recently been to your favorite furniture store and you saw that beautiful floor lamp that you’ve had your eyes on for a while on a very special seasonal discount, BUT you thought: If only I had a space for it! If the story sounds familiar, then you have to start considering two things: either you rent a bigger space, or you can revert to a much easier solution: decluttering. The idea of decluttering is tiresome indeed, however, do not think about the process, just think about the end results. Here are 5 decluttering ideas you can start with today:
Divide the tasks into spaces
Do not under any circumstance start the process of decluttering without a plan, otherwise, you will end up with chaotic rooms and you will quit the entire thing. We suggest you start small, build momentum and then move to the bigger things. Plan out which room to start with. If you are confused, the best place to start is the bedroom, and to be more specific, the closets. Take it one closet at a time, leading us to the next point.
Start with the drawers
We all know how many unused papers, pens, bills, dead batteries, and so on lie in your drawers under the “I might use it one-day” tab. If you have not used it in over a year, chances are you will never use it. So gather all of these things, scan bills you think you might use, and throw out all the rest.
If you change the title, you will change your attitude about it
Did your new year resolution contain a title: help someone I don’t know? Even if it didn’t, here is your chance to do it! Do not think of decluttering as extra unneeded work, think of it as a way to donate what you do not use, to someone who would make better use of it. When you change the title of why you are decluttering, the task will feel more interesting! So if your rug is getting boring, those unused vases are taking up so much space, and you cannot even spot your favorite outfits in your closet, then make a donation bag. You will feel better about yourself and your space will take a breather as well. The decluttering process is messy so you will need The Steam Team to restore and clean your space afterward.
Extend what you have
Since you planned out your decluttering, you have probably considered leaving the attic or kitchen to the end as they need the most work. It is important to note here that sometimes the problem is not how many items you have, but rather the storage unit itself is not used or divided properly. If that is the case then do not be afraid to add space to your home by efficiently using the space you have. If your kitchen’s wall cabinets are too low, remove the old ones and get tall ones with adjustable shelves. If your attic has no shelving space, then divide it based on the items you have and you will notice how much more space you actually have.
Less is More
Keep reminding yourself that decluttering your house will surely help you declutter your brain as well because simply, you will have less to clean, less to organize, less stress, and therefore fewer worries.
As mentioned earlier, the process is indeed tiring and therefore it will need dedication from your end. But how happy will you feel if you went back to your furniture store, and you found that there is still one last piece of that floor lamp you want but this time, you are able to buy it because you have the space for it? We bet it will feel nice. So do not hesitate, just declutter and you will have no regrets.
